Metacognition and Disorganization

With Sarah Butler, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Psychology, College DuPage

Description:
  • There are many strategies proposed by a range of professionals and authors for addressing chronic clutter problems and the process of decluttering.
  • The challenge for many can be figuring out which of the multitude of strategies will resonate with a particular individual.
  • Within psychology, metacognition is the process of thinking about one's thinking.
  • It is a form of self-reflection focusing on cognitive processes and identifying common thought patterns.
  • This class will discuss some of the possible psychological mechanisms that can create barriers to clearing clutter and how encouraging individuals to go through a metacognitive process of understanding how they think about clutter may suggest the most effective types of cluttering strategies.
